Corrosion Research

Materials deteriorate in the environment around them. This can have huge effects on the structural integrity of for example bridges, rail roads, pipes etc.

Electrochemistry and Corrosion

Since electrochemical reactions are the cause for many corrosion processes, electrochemistry seems to be the appropriate means to study corrosion processes and mechanisms, and also to learn more about the prevention and monitoring of corrosion.

Corrosion according to WikiPedia
A natural process, which converts a refined metal to a more chemically-stable form, such as its oxide, hydroxide, or sulfide. It is the gradual destruction of materials (usually metals) by chemical and/or electrochemical reaction with their environment.

There is a long history of PalmSens products that are being used for corrosion research in the field and in the lab environment. The new EmStat Pico allows you to go even one step further. It is a small step to develop a dedicated Corrosion Monitor that can be installed on-site for long term measurements and monitoring and that can be controlled from a distance.

Controlling Corrosion

Millions of euro’s are spent on controlling and preventing corrosion. Protective coatings are available in many forms and they all work towards the same goal; lengthening the lifespan of components and products. Many coating are still measured by exposing them for months with salt spray.

The Rapid Electrochemical Assessment of Paint (REAP) allows within 24 hours to determine the Time To Failure. During REAP a series of measurements with multiple samples is performed and the long term stability is extrapolated. Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) and cathodic disbonding are the central techniques for the REAP, which allows an estimation of the time to failure.

The EmStat4M module has all you need to perform REAP.  You can order the EmStat4M as a separate module, as an instrument: the EmStat Go with integrated EmStat4M or as a complete corrosion kit.

Modules and Readers for your application

The EmStat Go is a customizable rugged potentiostat for your corrosion experiments in the field. Inside can be either a high range EmStat4M  or a small EmStat Pico potentiostat module. To validate the EmStat4M for your corrosion application, we have the EIS corrosion package.

Corrosion Monitor

If you are interested to develop your own tailored Corrosion Monitor, please do not hesitate to contact us. All OEM customers get full support from our development team.

We can also help with the development of a carrier board or even develop a full custom design based on EmStat technology. We can handle small and large volume production. At PalmSens BV we have all disciplines in-house that you need for the development of your (custom) device.

We have also developed a special corrosion website for our research equipment. You can find more information here including a knowledge base.
